X PRIZE Challenge: Electric Car with Exchangeable Batteries

X PRIZE challenge to develop the infrastructure to allow electric vehicles to exchange standardized, rechargeable batteries at service stations. The team must come up with great political strategies to move this initiative forward. The team must discover effective corporate incentives and sponsorships (i.e. leverage existing service stations, competition among battery vendors, etc…). The team must solve technical issues such as battery power meters, aging batteries, and battery recycling. The team must decide on various standard battery sizes and power specifications so they can be produced by any manufacturer. Just like AAA, AA, C, and D batteries, there would be various standard electric vehicle battery sizes used by trucks, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. The team must accommodate various current and future battery technologies (i.e. hydrogen fuel cell, lithium ion, nickel-cadmium). Standard, replaceable batteries will future-proof the electric car. The team must also come up with a great way to load and unload the batteries from the vehicle and from the service station battery center (i.e. can the batteries be made light enough to carry or does a battery exchanging machine need to be developed?) The team must address financial considerations such as how much will service stations need to charge for exchanging a fully-charged battery for an uncharged battery. The team must figure out how to handle the exchange of newer batteries for older batteries. The team who best addresses these political, corporate, and technical issues and who can produce the best prototype electric car and battery service center will win the X PRIZE challenge.

US Economy TAKES OFF Within 90 Days Of Inauguration 2009!

Here is a step by step plan how the next president can turn the US economy around within 90 days of taking office.

1. Invite select members of congress, the US Treasury, the SEC, US utility executives and engineers to a “Smart Grid Summit”.

2. With the help of Microsoft collect all of the ideas and create a master Smart Grid plan, including the needs or roadblocks that would need to be dealt with legislatively.

3. Collect all of the names of the publicly traded raw materials companies, manufacturers, and professional services providers that would be involved in the creation of the Smart Grid.

4. The Treasury would sponsor an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) that would contain the entire spectrum of publicly traded electricity grid infrastructure players. The treasury would offer the ETF via NYSE or NASDAQ.

5. The Treasury would benefit as the ETF sponsor from arbitrage.

6. Repeat this process for other federal programs and initiatives. The proceeds would be rolled into other ETF funded initiatives, like Healthcare and social security etc.

The Budget would be balanced and the US debt could be retired in this way by attracting trillions of dollars into our economy from foreign sources.

This would be an effective tool to steer the country in the right direction by laser-like direction of capital on a never before seen scale. Just think of how the economy would transform if the government created a Fortune 1000 education ETF. It would enable investors to invest in fortune 1000 companies while enabling the government to make money to fund a revolutionary education system which would pay educators TOP DOLLAR to teach children K-12 so they are ready to perform in the Science and Math weighted Green Jobs.

I know many of you may scream “Socialism” or some other dogmatic epithet but hey, “Pull Your Heads Out Of The Sand!” The US stands behind privatized gains and socialized losses! This is the equivalent of having snotty, entitled rich kids who want to take risks and live the high life and when they screw up they want daddy to buy them a new car because they just totaled the Bentley or bail them out of jail or support the “I’m pretty therefore everyone else should suffer and I should live like a princess attitude. It is about time the US federal Government became a responsible parent and look at reality! We are staring at a debt of over $10,000,000,000,000. So great, Mom and Dad have been away for a little more than 100 years and come home to a completely wrecked house and a party bill of over 10 trillion dollars! THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!

Wake up! We are talking about our economic and literal biological survival. Sure there will be hicks screaming pinko and commie etc. but rationally those with a functioning mentality will understand we need to fundamentally transform how we are doing business.

By the way, the first step to curing our addiction to living on credit would be to audit the Federal Reserve and apply some CSI like tactics on the US debt ridden corpse going all the way back to 1913. I would suspect that they initial attempt at covering this crisis was a good ol boy keep it in the family deal with Bear Stearns / JP Morgan. I would like to know who the JP Morgan Share Holders are. I would like to know who the Federal Reserve share holders are and I am not talking about trusts etc. Who are the INDIVIDUAL share holders of the Federal Reserve. It is about time that OZ comes out from behind the curtain and takes responsibility for the mess he/she/they have created. We MUST demand transparency with the federal reserve just as we demand corporate transparency. My feeling is the audit has not happened because the crimes against the US would be so egregious that the Fed is afraid they would be thrown out.

It is time the Federal Reserve is audited. Let the IRS join them. The US citizens deserve to know how the money printing and tax collecting/spending shell game works. Once a light is shown on how unsustainable our current system is we will have no other choice than to transform our financial system.

Until then, lets enable the US to MAKE money and draw capital into our economy by enabling the Treasury to Sponsor ETFs.

Trust and Transformation: From Prison to Acceptance

Google Tech Talks
February 19, 2009

ABSTRACT

The Trust is a feature length documentary shot inside San Quentin State Prison and in surrounding Bay Area communities. The film is a character-driven story about the daily struggle of incarceration faced by three San Quentin inmates. After one man is released, the film follows him home as he attempts to re-integrate into society.

The film takes you inside San Quentin on a one-on-one journey with inmates in The National Trust Program, a re-socialization program in which life-term inmates mentor, train and prepare short-term inmates to become positive citizens. The Trust follows the men as they battle conflicts between the expectations of parole officers, spouses, children and friends.

The goal of The Trust is to start a national dialogue on the systemic effects of incarceration on communities across the country. In achieving this goal, Director and Producer Tamara Perkins has established extraordinary access through her relationships with the men of The Trust and the Warden and staff inside San Quentin. This project also captures a unique perspective on prison life through the use of an internal film crew, comprised of inmates trained in filmmaking through the San Quentin Media Project.

There has never been a documentary film done on this topic, let alone, with this depth into the souls of the inmates and their families. The film shows the psyche of the inmates and how they have to overcome their own demons, and society’s, in order to survive and remain free from returning to prison.

Join us in a private, intimate viewing and unseen footage from inside San Quentin and discussions with the director and producer Tamara Perkins and Jesse Dana.

Google.org invests more than $10 million in

http://www.obsnews.com Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) could supply thousands of times US energy needs Mountain View, California — In the continuing effort to develop electricity from renewable energy cheaper than from coal, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), through its philanthropic arm Google.org, announced $10.25 million in investments in a breakthrough energy technology called Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). Today’s announcement also includes funding for research on next-generation geothermal resource mapping, EGS information tools, and a policy agenda for geothermal energy.

EGS expands the potential of geothermal energy by orders of magnitude. The traditional geothermal approach relies on finding naturally occurring pockets of steam and hot water. The EGS process, by comparison, replicates these conditions by fracturing hot rock, circulating water through the system, and using the resulting steam to produce electricity in a conventional turbine.

A recent MIT report on EGS estimates that just 2% of the heat below the continental United States between 3 and 10 kilometers, depths within the range of current drilling technology, is more than 2,500 times the country’s total annual energy use.

“EGS could be the ‘killer app’ of the energy world. It has the potential to deliver vast quantities of power 24/7 and be captured nearly anywhere on the planet. And it would be a perfect complement to intermittent sources like solar and wind,” said Dan Reicher, Director of Climate and Energy Initiatives for Google.org.

Google’s Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal initiative focuses on solar thermal power, advanced wind, EGS and other potential breakthrough technologies. Google has set a goal to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity, enough to power a city the size of San Francisco, in years, not decades.

To advance EGS, Google.org announced funding for two companies and a university:

* AltaRock Energy, Inc.: $6.25 million investment to develop innovative technologies to achieve significant cost reductions and improved performance in EGS projects. For more information, please visit http://www.altarockenergy.com/.
* Potter Drilling, Inc.: $4 million investment in two tranches, to develop new approaches to lower the cost and expand the range of deep hard rock drilling, a critical element to large-scale deployment of EGS. For more information, please visit http://www.potterdrilling.com/.
* Southern Methodist University Geothermal Lab: $489,521 grant to improve understanding of the size and distribution of geothermal energy resources and to update geothermal mapping of North America. For more information, please visit http://www.smu.edu/geothermal/.

“Innovation is the path to massive quantities of cleaner, cheaper energy. The people we’re funding today have a real shot at lowering the cost of EGS, and bringing us closer to our goal of Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal,” added Dr. Larry Brilliant, executive director of Google.org.

“EGS is critical to the clean electricity revolution we need to solve the climate crisis, but EGS hasn’t received the attention it merits. That’s why we’re pressing for expanded support from government and increased investment from the private sector,” said Reicher, “We’re big believers in EGS and we’re looking for more opportunities.”

Ongoing Commitments

Today’s announcement represents the latest step in Google’s commitment to a clean energy future.

Google has been working hard on energy efficiency and making its business environmentally sustainable. To this end, the company has taken concrete steps to reduce its carbon footprint and accelerate improvements in green technology, including:

* Developing cutting-edge energy efficiency technology to power and cool its data centers in the U.S. and around the world using 50% less energy than the industry standard
* Generating electricity for its Mountain View campus from a 1.6 megawatt corporate solar panel installation, one of the largest in the U.S.
* Accelerating development and adoption of plug-in electric vehicles through the RechargeIT initiative (http://www.google.org/recharge/)
* Joining with other industry leaders to form the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a consortium that advocates the design and use of more energy-efficient computers and servers (http://www.climatesaverscomputing.org/)
* Working on policies that encourage renewable energy development and deployment, such as a U.S. Renewable Energy Standard
