Ralph Nader Says American Democracy Needs Wake-up Call

Welcome to American Profiles, VOA’s spotlight on notable Americans who have made a difference in how we think, live and act. Today: Consumer advocate Ralph Nader, whose controversial bids for the White House have stirred public debate over the future of the two-party system.

Ralph Nadar
Ralph Nadar
“For a nickel [five cents] you got a cup of coffee and 10 minutes of politics when you went to Nader’s Restaurant,” says Ralph Nader, who grew up in a small town in Connecticut talking politics at the dinner table and at his father’s diner.

“It was the ultimate expression of free speech. No matter what political view anybody had they never got a stern look from my father because he liked dissent. He used to tell us: everything we have in this country we like, originally started with dissent.”

Nader’s parents were Lebanese immigrants. He says his father’s idea of patriotism was to try to improve the country and the lives of others.

“And then he would turn the question on them and ask, ‘Do you love your country?’ [They would answer,] ‘You’re darn right I do.’ They would pound the counter. Then he’d say, ‘Why don’t you spend little more time improving it?’”

Nader says his parents’s taught him how to listen, and to think critically. He says those family values led him to become a lawyer and to fight injustice.

In 1965 Nader published a book called “Unsafe At Any Speed.” In it he argued that the U.S. automobile industry was knowingly building dangerous vehicles. He specifically targeted a General Motors car, the Corvair. He said the Corvair had design flaws that could lead to accidents.

GM attempted to discredit him and investigated his personal life. Nader sued the company — and won. And Nader used the settlement money to fight consumer battles for safer cars, food, homes and workplaces.

He hired young advocates who became known as Nader’s Raiders.

One said, “Everybody worked until two in the morning or so and then we just collapsed and would get up at eight and start working again.”

Another added, “We were there 24-7 [24 hours a day, 7 days a week]. It was just ridiculous.” “Maybe if we started talking about civic globalization instead of corporate globalization, the world will move forward.”

In 1996 and 2000, Nader ran as a presidential candidate for the Green Party, shunning the policies of both the Democratic and Republican Parties. He announced his bid for the White House again in 2004 as an independent.

“Presidential politics has been broken for a long time. The two parties have been broken. They need a wake-up call. They need somebody to hold their feet to the fire,” he says.

President George W. Bush won re-election in 2004. Many Democrats dubbed Nader a spoiler for his refusal, once again, to get out of the race. “How can you spoil a spoiled political system, to begin with, and second: if we all have an equal right to run for political office, then none of us are spoilers or all of us are spoilers of one another.”

Nader says today that presidential hopefuls must raise hundreds of millions of dollars to be competitive. “And where do you think they are going to get that money? They are not going to get that money from the people who harvest our food or the people that clean up after us or the people who do the everyday work in the country. They are going to get it from the millionaires, the mega-millionaires, the billionaires and the corporations.

Nader — now 73 — says he has not made up his mind whether to make another run for the White House. But one thing seems certain — as a self-proclaimed public citizen, he will continue to let the American people know where he stands.

The Cowboys Revenge on the Miserable Wretch Bruce Dern for Killing the Duke; John Wayne

Boy the Duke sure did beat the crap out of that vermin ridin son of a gun. Look at his face, now he looks like the miserable wretch that he is. And now the cowboys are going to get their revenge. I know some will find their revenge rather harsh, but an eye for an eye was justice back in the old west, and maybe it still should be today.

John Wayne died in the Cowboys,
and these seven movies:
Reap the Wild Wind (1942)
The Fighting Seabees (1944)
Wake of the Red Witch (1949)
The Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)
The Alamo (1960)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
The Shootist (1976)

After two years working as a prop man at the Fox Film Corporation for $75 a week, his first starring role was in the 1930 movie The Big Trail. The first western epic sound motion picture established his screen credentials, although it was a commercial failure. Before this film, Wayne had only been given on-screen credit once (in Words and Music), as “Duke Morrison”. The director Raoul Walsh, who “discovered” Wayne, suggested giving him the stage name “Anthony Wayne”, after Revolutionary War general “Mad Anthony” Wayne. Fox Studios chief Winfield Sheehan rejected “Anthony Wayne” as sounding “too Italian.” Walsh then suggested “John Wayne.” Sheehan agreed and the name was set. Wayne himself was not even present for the discussion. His pay was raised to $105 a week.
Wayne continued making westerns, most notably at Monogram Pictures, and serials for Mascot Pictures Corporation, including The Three Musketeers (1933), a French Foreign Legion tale with no resemblance to the novel which inspired its title. Coincidentally, he also appeared in some of the Three Mesquiteers westerns whose title was a play on the Alexandre Dumas, père classic. He was tutored by stuntmen in riding and other western skills. He and famed stuntman Yakima Canutt developed and perfected stunts still used today.
Beginning in 1928 and extending over the next 35 years, Wayne appeared in more than twenty of John Ford’s films, including Stagecoach (1939), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), The Quiet Man (1952), The Searchers (1956), The Wings of Eagles (1957), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). His performance in Stagecoach made him a star.
His first color film was Shepherd of the Hills (1941), in which he co-starred with his longtime friend Harry Carey. The following year he appeared in his only film directed by Cecil B. DeMille, the Technicolor epic Reap the Wild Wind, in which he co-starred with Ray Milland and Paulette Goddard; it was one of the rare times he played a character with questionable values.
In 1949, director Robert Rossen offered the starring role of All the King’s Men to Wayne. Wayne refused, believing the script to be un-American in many ways. Broderick Crawford, who eventually got the role, won the 1949 Oscar for best male actor, ironically beating out Wayne, who had been nominated for Sands of Iwo Jima.
He lost the leading role in The Gunfighter to Gregory Peck because of his refusal to work for Columbia Pictures after Columbia chief Harry Cohn had mistreated him years before as a young contract player. Cohn had bought the project for Wayne, but Wayne’s grudge was too deep, and Cohn sold the script to Twentieth Century Fox, which cast Peck in the role Wayne badly wanted but refused to bend for.
One of Wayne’s most popular roles was in The High and the Mighty (1954), directed by William Wellman and based on a novel by Ernest K. Gann. His portrayal of a heroic airman won widespread acclaim. Wayne also portrayed aviators in The Flying Tigers, Island in the Sky, Flying Leathernecks and The Wings of Eagles and Jet Pilot.

John Wayne in The Searchers (1956)
The Searchers continues to be widely regarded as perhaps Wayne’s finest and most complex performance. In 2006 Premiere Magazine ran an industry poll in which his portrayal of Ethan Edwards was rated the 87th greatest performance in film history. He named his youngest son Ethan after the character.
John Wayne won a Best Actor Oscar for True Grit (1969). Wayne was also nominated as the producer of Best Picture for The Alamo, one of two films he directed. The other was The Green Berets (1968), the only major film made during the Vietnam War to support the war.[6] During the filming of Green Berets, the Degar or Montagnard people of Vietnam’s Central Highlands, fierce fighters against communism, bestowed on Wayne a brass bracelet that he wore in the film and all subsequent films.
According to the Internet Movie Database, Wayne played the lead in 142 of his film appearances.

UTAH POLICE QUICK-DRAW TASERS

14 Seconds into a traffic stop a Utah police officer knocked down a man shooting him with a TASER. He refused to sign a summons (required in Utah) for speeding because the officer refused to say how fast he was allegedly going. The man was walking away from the officer with his back turned.
Under the arguments that TASER corporation and proponents of TASER use, if the officer did not have a TASER he would have used his deadly force to shoot the man with his pistol.
Utah police issued a summons to a 70 year-old woman who did not keep her lawn pretty and green. In Utah recipients must sign a summons when issued. She refused and the police arrested her.
This footage is from FOX25 News, commentary by V.B. Channel 25 Boston, MA.

Augsburg College Releases Biodiesel Miracle

At a joint press conference held this morning in Science Hall 302, Augsburg College and SarTec Corporation officially announced the discovery of a chemical process that could free the United States from its dependence on petroleum diesel fuel. This revolutionary method to make biodiesel started with the curiosity of Augsburg chemistry senior Brian Krohn and ended with three Twin Cities scientists creating the “Mcgyan Process.”

Brian initiated his summer research project by deciding to study new ways to produce biodiesel. After Brian’s preliminary research, his professor advised him to contact chemist Dr. Clayton McNeff, an Augsburg alumnus and vice president of SarTec. McNeff, his chief scientist Dr. Ben Yan, and Augsburg’s Professor Arlin Gyberg took Brian’s idea and created a chemical reaction that has never before been described in scientific literature. As a result of the Mcgyan Process discovery, McNeff co-founded Ever Cat Fuels based in Anoka. It is the only plant in the world using this new method to manufacture biodiesel.

Industry analysts have been surprised by how well the Mcgyan Process works and its implications for fuel production worldwide. This process has many advantages over previous biodiesel production methods. It can convert a much wider range of feedstock oils and animal fats into biodiesel, including the byproducts from ethanol production. The Mcgyan Process recycles the catalyst and alcohol necessary to make biodiesel, it reduces the reaction time from hours to seconds, and it doesn’t use water or dangerous chemicals. In short, it can make more biodiesel quickly and with a minimal impact on the environment.
Click for a description of the process by Dr. McNeff
(QuickTime video, ~4 min., 6 MB)

Because the Mcgyan Process can use a wider range of renewable oils, it has opened the door to a truly Earth-changing possibility. Algae that capture carbon dioxide can be a source of Mcgyan feedstock oil. The use of algae oil simultaneously reduces the demand on arable land for fuel purposes and scrubs the atmosphere of a greenhouse gas. SarTec has conducted research into using algae oils to supply the Mcgyan Process. The corporation is working on the use of algae to reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants while creating a biodiesel feedstock.

Picture of media interviewing Brian Krohn and Professor Gyberg.A patent is now pending on the Mcgyan Process which is named for the three scientists officially credited with the discovery (McNeff, Gyberg, and Yan). Ever Cat Fuels Corporation is currently producing 50,000 gallons of biodiesel per year and is using it as a power source. Its production capacity will increase to 3 million gallons per year when its new plant begins operation in Isanti later this year. Then, Ever Cat Fuels hopes to sell the technology and equipment to nations around the world.

All of these remarkable discoveries started with Brian’s experiential learning at Augsburg, which is a fundamental part of the college’s learning environment. His research will lead Brian to a promising future in science and create opportunities for Augsburg students for years to come. “This one-on-one relationship between professor and student may result in one of modern day’s greatest discoveries,” says Augsburg President Paul Pribbenow. “Augsburg is proud to be in the forefront and grateful that it may lead to a source of on-going funding that will enable us to take our science program to great heights.”

The biodiesel press conference garnered attention in local and even international media. Here is a list of links to a sample of that coverage:

To the Church of Scientology

This video was created to address the lack of statements issued by the CO$ during the initial declaration of war by Anonymous. Since then our efforts have increased, including the highly successful February 10th protests, and Scientologists have been forced to acknowledge us. Their claims that we practice “religious bigotry” and are “cyber-terrorists” is erroneous and lacking place in reality.

To the Church of Scientology:

Why do you refuse to acknowledge Anonymous, even as we cost you more and more of your precious monetary gain?

Daily we gain more and more in our arsenal the weapons we will use to fight your cult of oppression, your religion of possession. You in your arrogance believed that you could attack the Internet, bully its corporations and its citizens, stifle the free speech of its users and not face an uprising from its people.

You were wrong.

Even now as Anonymous wages war on your online presence, we silently infiltrate your so-called churches as members new and old. With each day’s passing we gain the information needed to win the battles that we will face going forward.

We anticipate casualties (arrests, etc) on both sides, but to Anonymous this is acceptable for the greater good; a world without the existence of Scientology. We will accept no other outcome. There can be no other outcome.

Expect our attacks to increase in the coming weeks. They will be ruthless. Your Orgs will bleed green the money which you have sucked from the veins of the persons you have deceived.

Protect your crumbling empire if you can. Anonymous says your end draws nigh.
